GitHub Copilot turns on opt‑out training for individual users; CLI adds headless MCP auth as pricing shifts stir backlash

GitHub Copilot will now use interaction data from Free/Pro users for model training by default, while enterprises are excluded.

GitHub detailed that starting April 24, interaction data from individual Copilot users (Free, Pro, Pro+) may be used to train models unless they opt out; Business and Enterprise data is excluded, and students/teachers are not affected FAQ.

At the same time, developers are voicing concerns about unpredictable Copilot costs and paused individual signups, with reports of usage‑based billing increasing charges for premium models (Yahoo Tech recap, community post).

On the tooling side, Copilot CLI v1.0.40 shipped headless auth for MCP via client_credentials, a more reliable /research orchestrator, and quality/stability fixes that matter for day‑to‑day workflows release notes.

[ WHY_IT_MATTERS ]
01.

Individual seats now default to data being used for training, which changes privacy posture and procurement choices.

02.

Pricing turbulence and new CLI capabilities may shift how teams standardize on enterprise seats and automate workflows.

[ WHAT_TO_TEST ]
  • terminal

Audit who’s on Copilot Individual vs Business/Enterprise; verify opt-out is set where policy requires and confirm no enterprise data is used for training.

  • terminal

Trial copilot-cli v1.0.40 in non‑prod: stand up an MCP server using client_credentials, exercise /research, and validate autopilot limits and CPU stability on large attachments.

Legacy codebase integration strategies...

  • 01.

Migrate straggler Individual seats to Business/Enterprise to avoid data training and regain predictable billing and controls.

  • 02.

Update internal guidance: when to use Copilot, required opt-out for individuals, and guardrails for agent actions.

[ GREENFIELD_PERSPECTIVE ]

Fresh architecture paradigms...

  • 01.

Start with enterprise-managed seats, cost caps, and centralized policy; avoid mixing personal plans on company code.

  • 02.

Adopt Copilot CLI with MCP headless flows for CI/bots where browser auth is impractical.
