Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1 (and Mythos 5.1) with cheaper cache reads, better agentic coding, and a new enterprise data-retention model.
Fable 5.1 cuts API cache reads to $0.25/MTok and improves long-horizon coding performance, with Terminal-Bench gains over Fable 5 and Opus in internal evals (launch, metrics). Defaults differ by product (High effort in Claude Code, Medium in Cowork/Claude.ai), which can shift token usage and cost.
Enterprise Frontier Safeguards promise zero data retention by keeping state in customer-controlled infra, rolling out in phases this fall. Until then, eligible customers can run Fable 5.1 with zero data retention launch.
Independent testing disputes net savings at max effort due to higher output tokens, and Anthropic is introducing text watermarks with a detection API—though early analysis flags a detection blind spot (analysis, watermark critique).
Long-running agentic workloads may get meaningfully cheaper without changing prompts or tools.
Customer-controlled data retention directly addresses enterprise governance and vendor risk.

Pilot EFS design: map how customer-controlled storage integrates with your privacy, logging, and incident-response workflows.
Legacy codebase integration strategies...
- 01.
Gate Anthropic calls through your API layer and add prompt-cache metrics to validate 5.1 savings before broad rollout.
- 02.
Audit code-assist use: enable vulnerability finding, verify fewer safety fallbacks, and ensure watermark policies don’t break pipelines.
Fresh architecture paradigms...
- 01.
Design agents around tool use and terminal loops; default to Medium effort, escalating only when quality gains justify token spend.
- 02.
Plan for EFS from day one: separate secrets, logs, and audit trails to keep vendor data flows minimal.
